Sculptures by this Artist:
Bernad was born on the 28th of September 1970 in Highfield, Harare. He was raised and educated here. Highfield is a high-density housing area approximately 15 km north of Harare.
During school he would visit his relative Garrison Machinjili. This is where he was first exposed to stone sculpting. Once he had seen the art in progress he knew that he wanted to do nothing else but become a sculptor.
After completing his O’Levels in 1992, he became apprenticed to this relative, Garrison Machinjili. He spent three years working with Garrison before leaving to work on his own. He now lives and works in Chitungwiza, Zimbabwe.
Over recent years his work has become increasingly popular amongst local and international buyers. His sets of birds engaged in varying activities have proved highly successful.
A keen observer of nature, he regularly visits the city’s dams and rivers to watch birds in their natural habitat. He is never without his sketchbook, which he uses to record their different poses. He later translates the sketches into sculpture.
Bernad works mostly in the various Serpentines but prefers to use Opalstone when it is available. He makes use of a combination of media. Metal for the legs of the birds and stone for the bodies, with the occasional use of wood. The composition of the group is outstanding as they are always full of movement. His attention to detail is obvious. Some of his birds are feeding whilst others look up as if watching for danger. All of these qualities make Bernad’s work simply irresistible.
Always cheerful and hard working, Bernad is starting to find a place for himself in the ranks of Zimbabwe’s new generation of stone sculptors.
