Celestino Mukavhi was raised in the Masvingo province of Zimbabwe with 8 older siblings. He lived in the communal lands, where his parents were subsistence farmers with little education. By the age of fifteen, Celestino had lost both of his parents and moved to Harare in search of better employment.
While in Harare, Mukhavi was forced to live on the streets. One morning, while sleeping on the side of the road, Mukhavi had the good fortune of being awakened by master sculptor Boira Mteki. Mteki invited Mukhavi to join him in carving stones.
Mukhavi assisted Mteki for six months, until he was able to work on his own. Mukhavi has developed his own distinctive style of carving the female form. His works celebrate femininity and are dynamic in their movement. Their simplicity and clean lines have made them coveted pieces by collectors the world over.
