Godfrey Kututwa

Sculptures by this Artist:

Godfrey Kututwa lives in Harare, Zimbabwe. His education was cut short due to lack of funds and a physical disability, as he cannot speak and is almost completely deaf.

At the age of twenty-one Godfrey began sculpting from the encouragement of Claud Nyanhongo, one of Zimbabwe’s leading artists. Godfrey stayed and worked with Claud for several years. He apprenticed with him mostly in Chitungwiza, a high-density village, about twenty kilometers from Zimbabwe's capital, Harare.

In 1996 Godfrey began working on his own and established himself as an artist capable of creating powerful and expressive sculptures. In a short span of 12 years he has become one of Zimbabwe’s leading artists.

Kututwa’s subject matter is taken from the natural world. Animals, birds, and human figures often interact together in portrayals that reflect Shona ancestral spirit beliefs. These are usually composite animals that share features of other animals, creatures from a surreal world, from Shona Fables.

Since the early 1990’s his work has been exhibited in several of Zimbabwe’s leading galleries. In 1999 he traveled overseas for the first time when he was invited to attend a stone sculpture workshop in England.

Through his sculptures Godfrey Kututwa has found an eloquent means of expressing himself. He states that, “My work will stand for my voice to the world”.
