Norbert Shamuyarira is clearly one of the best of the post-independence generation. Having lived a life of tragedy, Norbert's sadness is apparent in his work. He lost his mother at a young age, was then abandoned by his father; and then the brother who raised him took his own life. "Up to now, I still don't know what happiness is," he says.
The heads he sculpts are solitary and peaceful, and usually express the absence of a partner, leaving a lonely man or woman. The softness of the faces helps to moderate the tragic nature of his work. The sculptures are simply stunning.
