This very rare find comes from my personal collection and dates to the late 60's when Fanizani was in his early days of sculpting. The piece represents a Chewa fetish figure - Chewa being from Malawi culture where many of the early artists at Tengenenge came from. The hole in the stomach depicts the place where the traditional healer would put medicinal herbs with the intention of healing the subject. The piece is sculpted in Tengenenge Serpentine and could be polished to give it superb color. I however prefer the natural, aged appearance. A rare find and one of historical importance. Shipping will be $40 within the contiguous USA.
