Royal Katiyo is a native of the Shumba Totem in the Murehwa district, where his father is a farmer. In 1992, Katiyo traveled to Mvurwi where he was taught to sculpt by the Mgavazi brothers Luke and Francis. He then studied with renowned sculptor Anderson Mukomberanwa, who greatly influenced Katiyo.
One of the defining aspects of Katiyo's work is his strong contrast between the polished and rough areas of the stone. He is considered an important up and coming artist. His work has been shown in exhibitions in countries such as Germany, Austrailia, Spain, South Africa, Singapore and the United Kingdom.
