Sirio Marezva

Sculptures by this Artist:

Sirio Marezva was born in Chitungwiza, Zimbabwe on the 2nd of July in 1976. Chitungwiza is a high density suburb north of Harare, the capital of Zimbabwe.

Sirio was educated at Chinembiri Primary School and Seke Two High School in Chitungwiza. He is from a family of eight siblings. Sirio has four brothers and three sisters. His brothers Tonderai and Kumbirai also sculpt.

In 1993 Sirio’s brother Tonderai strongly influenced him to sculpt. In 1999 he became an assistant to Tonderai during Tonderai’s year as Resident Artist at Chapungu Sculpture Park. Sirio began by assisting with the finishing touches of his works through washing, sanding and polishing the pieces. It was during this time that he learned a perfect finish is most important to good sculpture. During his time at Chapungu he studied other artists in residence at the sculpture park. He was very impressed by Dominic Benhura, who encouraged him to be original in his approach to Sculpting.

In 2002 Sirio took part in a local workshop at Dominic Benhura’s Studio. He looks forward to further exchange with other Sculptors who will help further establish him as a successful sculptor.

Sirio lives and works in Chitungwiza, a suburb in Harare. This is an area with much poverty, unemployment and lack of education. Thus, education is very important to Sirio. This is evident from the sculptures he produces which often feature children reading.

Sirio is a young up and coming artist in the sculpting community in Zimbabwe. His perseverance and dedication has proven to be his success as a sculptor.
