Tonderai has four brothers and three sisters. His brothers Sirio and Kumbirai also sculpt.
Tonderai began sculpting in 1991 when he was still at school. Eager to develop his sculpting skills, in 1999 he was invited to the Artists program at Chapungu Sculpture Park for a year as a resident artist.
Tonderai’s influence to begin sculpting came from Chituwa Jemali and Moses Masaya who he used to assist with the finishing touches of their works by washing, sanding and polishing the pieces. The late Edmore Shereni taught him to sculpt.
Tonderai has great interest in his Shona culture and the history of his country. His work depicts aspects of his culture and surroundings.
Tonderai has taken part in an international workshop in Cape town, South Africa from January to March 2003.
