Witness Bonjisi

Sculptures by this Artist:

Witness Bonjisi was born in 1976 on the 25th of September in Mudzi, in the district of Mutoko, Zimbabwe. The second child born in a family of seven, he grew up in Domboshava, Chinamhora where he achieved his primary education. His high school education was at Tafara High in Harare; where his main interests were art and football. Upon graduation he moved to Mabvuku, on the outskirts of Harare, and completed his secondary studies.

In 1992, inspired by his brother, the late Lameck Bonjisi, Witness began his sculpting career. With the guidance of Lameck and the late Nicholas Mukomberanwa he learned the art form that his ancestors had been doing for centuries. Witness apprenticed with these two artists for four years. In 1996, he began to successfully produce his own work.

Witness creates very contemporary sculpture unlike that of the earlier shona artists which is far more primitive in nature. He bases the subject matter on his intuitive sense using the shape of the stone as his guide. Thus creating contemporary sculpture through his vivid imagination.

Witness has flown to America and Switzerland attending workshops and exhibiting. To date his work has sold in France, Holland, Belgium, Germany, England, Greece and the United States. His sculptures can be found throughout the world in private collections and galleries.
